MasterCard SecureCode

MasterCard SecureCode is an initiative by MasterCard that is designed to make internet shopping safer for Cardholders.
What is MasterCard SecureCode?
MasterCard SecureCode is a program designed to provide cardholders with added security when transacting online. Online transactions will be authenticated with an additional layer of security for protection against the unauthorised usage of cardholder accounts.
How will Card Services manage this?
The solution to MasterCard SecureCode will be the introduction of a one-time SMS password for all online transactions with merchants that have signed-up to MasterCard SecureCode. This will apply to all transactions, regardless of the dollar value of the transaction. Without the one-time SMS password, the cardholder will be unable to continue the transaction.
How will it work?
The MasterCard SecureCode process will apply to any online transaction a cardholder undertakes through a merchant that is enrolled into the program. The process will be as follows:
- When a cardholder submits their online order at a participating merchant, a unique one-time password will automatically be sent to their mobile phone via SMS prior to the completion of the transaction.
- A window will pop-up online, prompting the cardholder to enter the unique password.
- Once the unique SMS password is entered by the cardholder, an authentication process will run, where the cardholder will be identified and the transaction authorised to go ahead.
